Am I the only one who, on a daily basis, finds a new fitness gadget/piece of equipment/article of clothing that I desperately want to purchase!

Reboot Camp

Friday, June 18th, 2010

I used to loathe recovery days.

Days off from working out would make me feel fat and lazy in no time flat. But I’ve come to appreciate the rest because the day after I feel strong and fresh as a daisy.

And, while a day of rest can be absolute bliss, it doesn’t mean you have to sit on your glutes all day and eat bon-bons. Am I right or am I right?

I like to think of “off” days as “active recovery” days instead. So on those days I go to my make-believe Reboot Camp and…

  • Enjoy moderate activity like a nice long walk with the dog or taking a scenic bike ride
  • Make sure I drink enough water (I drink a ton on days I train and not so much when I’m not exerting myself)
  • Like Seanna, I foam roll, or use Yoga Tune Up Balls—these suckers are awesome for working out the kinks in hard to reach areas, do yourself a favor and check them out!
  • Build in time to do some food prep. Cooking is therapy for me so I use days off to shop, cut up veggies, whip up some homemade protein bars, that sort of thing
  • Shut down the day early by indulging in an hour of mindless TV (Hello, Real Housewives of Any County!) and getting 7-8 hours of sleep

I know these sound like 5 simple things but if I don’t take the time to reboot, I burnout.

Enough about me what do YOU do to reboot?

YOU KNOW YOU’RE OLD WHEN…

Your joints are more accurate meteorologists than the guys with the Live Doppler 10,000.

It takes longer to rest than it did to get tired.

Your back goes out more than you do.

It takes twice as long – to look half as good.

Everything that works hurts, and what doesn’t hurt doesn’t work.
