You’re too hard on yourself. One study I came across when doing Monday’s piece showed that walking in heels was less stressful in some ways than running in conventional (read: thicker in heel) athletic shoes. Hey, it’s something. :) Bunions are no joke, however.

Oh they myriad of issues that happen to the feet. I remember when I was training for my half marathon I lost 2 or 3 toe nails. I was also rock climbing at the time, which require VERY tight shoes. Thus, even after the marathon, my toenails did not return for a while.

Now I have all my nails. But if I decide to get back into climbing, I will likely see a few disapear again. I will say, however, that when I lose toe nails due to a sport, I don’t mind at all. but when/if it happens not due to a sport, I get pissy.

My father gets nasty fissures on his thumbs every winter. They are TERRIBLE. He ends up taking athletic tape and wrapping it around his thumbs, they are so painful. I wish I could find a way for him to prevent them, but he is my father, ergo stubborn, and does not want to listen to me.

My husband has toes growing on top of his toes. I am sure it is one of these conditions, but I’m too scared to look too closely! He plays basketball all the time and his feet take a beating! Thanks for bringing up some nasty stuff, girl. I need to go get some therapy to remove the thought of “fissures” from my mind…ewww…:o)

Heather, I remember you mentioned about running in thick soled shoes was more stressful than walking in heels. Good thing I don’t run for distance. But I had to put it out there … dress shoes are bad for feet. Period. Back to that vanity vs. sanity discussion I have w/ myself these days.

Amy, I knew you had lost toes from running and wondered about rock climbing. Does anyone do that barefoot? About your dad, is he a good fat eater? Is there any chance he would put Aquaphor or Vaseline on his cuticles at night to keep them moisturized? I used to get cracked cuticles in the winter and they were painful. Since I’ve stepped up my good fats, I haven’t had one. Me thinks there’s a connection.

Jodi, Take that man to the pedicurist STAT! Bet it’s corns. I hate the name “corns.”. Ewww. And it’s “fizzues.” !!!

Seanna – good thing all those heels and dress shoes are still in their boxes! : ) my feet are extremely important to me, especially in the summer time. I pride myself on regularly getting pedicures. (Always at the same place of course…) I try to change out of my gym sneakers and socks after a workout. I always keep an extra pair of socks in my gym bag! For the life of me I cannot understand why the women on my hockey team walk around the locker room barefoot (if you even knew what goes on in there post games with my boyfriend’s Friday afternoon men’s league…you’d prob cry or throw up… and he runs the place!) Half the women have what appears to be corns…you can find me in the corner taking off my equipment with uggs on! I use to dance full time when I was in high school and in the summer during college, so I can only imagine what your daughter’s feet look like…

Hi Kristina – Oh that’s right, you have a bunch of fab shoes, looking at you all big eyed and eager for you to wear them! I love the picture in my mind of that. :) My foot health and appearance are important to me too and so I hate that I’m developing bunions. I’m doing more sneakers and flat boots this winter for that reason. I’m also a very regular pedicure person, I pumice in the shower and slather on the cream faithfully – all year long. Winter is my favorite time to go crazy w/ polish colors (currently I have on a gorgeous teal called Mermaid, OPI for Sephora) but in the summer I go red, bright pink, or french so nothing clashes. Good for you for being smart about where you walk and keeping your feet covered. Throw some alcohol wipes in your gym bag for times when you can’t avoid stepping on the floor barefoot. My daughter’s feet aren’t bad (she thinks so, but I think she’s perfect). She takes care of them and keeps up w/ pedis and sort of ignores the minor flaws when in sandals. She’s a supremely confident chick that way. As always, thanks for checking in and commenting. :)

Seanna, he uses aquaphor!!!!! He even will put it on and sleep in rubber gloves so it really gets into his hands.

As for the fats, I know he eats a lot of fat, but I bet not enough Gfats. I might have to get him eating coconut oil.

Its not his cuticles, its his actual thumb skin, it completely cracks apart, deep cracks.

So I just called him to get him to start eating coconut oil…guess what, he can’t be bothered. He says he found something called “Balm Bag” which was invented in 1880 and farmers used it on cows’ utters b/c they were getting chapped. Well, I guess the farmers would come in from working all day and their hands were super soft, so people started using this stuff on their hands. So Dad says he does not need to eat coconut oil b/c the balm bag is working.

Needless to say, I am annoyed b/c I think he needs some better Gfat, but like I said before, he can’t be bothered. But I will have to look up this balm bag, I might use it on my feet.

Oh, no one rock climbs barefoot (that I know of – now that I said it I am sure there is someone out there who does), it would be like dancing point w/o point shoes.

  8. Seanna says:

That’s what I figured about rock climbing barefoot; I was actually sort of kidding. Oh man, can you imagine a ballerina w/ out pointe shoes? My little daughter gave up ballet after a year of pointe. She used to come home crying. :(

When my kids were babies their pediatrician recommended Bag Balm for unspecified, mild rashes. It worked pretty good. It will be good for his fingers (and feet or anywhere else). He sounds stubborn! You ought to make him something and sneak in coconut oil. He won’t be able to identify why whatever it is taste so good but he’ll love it! As you know, any good fat will help you skin. Get him on them!
