I just read an article on something like this. It was on a girl who was pegged to be the favorite in an event but blew it badly because she mentally wore herself down before the run and crashed halfway through the event. She was mentally done, had nothin’. It was a good read. They pegged it as some kind of motivation type deal and mental toughness, clearly it was more related to this. And there was a specialist-guy who they interviewed that brought up this theory and said that her brain put the brakes on before she started but they didn’t go too deep into it. Gotta go fish this article out now…:o)
YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY Heather, you just made my day! You know I wanted to hear your CNS theory. I never know about the Central Govenor, I love your Matrix-esque description of him! I can totally see it!
I, like you, am a believer of this governing thing in our body. Maybe some of the elite athletes have the ability to push past it, or override it, but I dont think there is any escaping its existence. There is just too much out there showing the relationship between all different systems in our bodies. If we could turn of the govenor, then we would be able to train while sick.
Anyone who has had the pleasure of having a stomach virus has experienced the governor in effect. (I know, unpleasant topic). But you are yacking your brains out. After, you can almost feel the cells in your body quivering. The electrolyte balance is off. If there was no central governor, what would be stopping you from getting up and running a marathon? But that feeling, that weakness, that internal quivering puts your right in bed.
Thanks for a great article heather!!!!!
I just started a new training program two weeks ago and here I was curing my MP4 trainers for the brutal Friday workouts. I guess I should shift some of the blame to my CNS for bonking on me instead.
Bwahahaha, Joanna!
Ok Kas…seriously? We couldn’t have found something better as example than that? You know I just detoxed my house…lol:o)
