I’ll admit it, I have a girl crush on our athlete of the week. If I had a vision board, this girl would be plastered all over it. Not only is she an amazing athlete with a killer physique, but she’s also a business owner, and an extraordinary fitness-inspired jewelry designer. YOU MUST check out her work at Fashletics.com.

Are you ready? Let’s meet…

If we asked your coach or training partner to list three words that describe you they would be: Motivated, determined, and lots of heart!

What are you training 4? Just finished training for a half marathon and hope to train for a fall half.

What is the best nutrition or training tip you’ve ever been given? Eat from the ground.

Tell us about your most memorable athletic achievement. My first half marathon March 2005. I never believed I was capable of completing one.

The MP4 Spotlight is On: Joanna Banana

Friday, July 16th, 2010

Normally I highlight an athlete each week on the Friday blog, but this week I simply have to tell you about my latest obsession. It’s something I like to call Joanna Banana Ice Cream or sometimes I just call it…

IMG_8379Unchunky Monkey Soft Serve

  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 T or more of peanut butter or PB2 (powdered peanut butter)
  • 2 T chocolate protein powder

Blend all ingredients together in a high speed blender or food processor to your desired consistency. Scoop into a bowl and enjoy every bite.

I eat this creation for breakfast some days, immediately post workout some days, and just about any day that ends in Y. You must try it, too. I insist!

Enough about me, tell me about your latest food (or workout) obsession…

Reboot Camp

Friday, June 18th, 2010

I used to loathe recovery days.

Days off from working out would make me feel fat and lazy in no time flat. But I’ve come to appreciate the rest because the day after I feel strong and fresh as a daisy.

And, while a day of rest can be absolute bliss, it doesn’t mean you have to sit on your glutes all day and eat bon-bons. Am I right or am I right?

I like to think of “off” days as “active recovery” days instead. So on those days I go to my make-believe Reboot Camp and…

  • Enjoy moderate activity like a nice long walk with the dog or taking a scenic bike ride
  • Make sure I drink enough water (I drink a ton on days I train and not so much when I’m not exerting myself)
  • Like Seanna, I foam roll, or use Yoga Tune Up Balls—these suckers are awesome for working out the kinks in hard to reach areas, do yourself a favor and check them out!
  • Build in time to do some food prep. Cooking is therapy for me so I use days off to shop, cut up veggies, whip up some homemade protein bars, that sort of thing
  • Shut down the day early by indulging in an hour of mindless TV (Hello, Real Housewives of Any County!) and getting 7-8 hours of sleep

I know these sound like 5 simple things but if I don’t take the time to reboot, I burnout.

Enough about me what do YOU do to reboot?

I am not a trendsetter but one of the trends I love seeing is how empowered women athletes have become. They are becoming more and more educated about their sport and their sports nutrition. Kind of like you — you wouldn’t be reading MP4 if you weren’t hungry for information to help you become a better, faster, stronger, hotter athlete, now would you?

I am energized by all sorts of trend setting women athletes like….
