  1. Interesting. Very interesting. I tend to be in the camp that cows are the only things that should be drinking cows milk. So I really don’t drink the stuff and I reach for coconut and almond milks instead.

That being said…I do eat other products like yogurt, cheese, and cottage cheese. I am on a break from all dairy at the moment to see if it helps with my body transformation goals. So far, so good.

Awesome, Joanna. I didn’t even cover the illness-preventing bennies (dairy = mucous = colds and such). Getting sick sure puts a damper on training! I’m with you. I didn’t even have cow’s milk, so–truth be told–that’s coconut milk in the pic. ;) I like some cheese/yogurt/ice cream here and there, but I must know the source. BTW, ever tried the coconut based Purely Decadent ice cream by So Delicious? You’ll never know the diff, I swear. :)

Great Blog! I personally feel better when I haven’t had as much dairy. AND, after a date with Ben and Jerry’s I usually spend some time in the porcelain confessional – HAH!

I love So Delicious products! (and so do my vegan parents). Ever since I discovered unsweetened vanilla almond milk, I use that instead of the skim cow’s milk. Still can’t part with my cottage cheese and Greek yogurt … All organic though … with three little girls in our house, that’s a MUST!

I’ve been wanting to try goat’s milk ice cream for the longest time. That will have to wait for a cheat meal ;-)

    Very informative post! Thanks!

Hey I’ll take being thrown under the dairy bus, lol. I am not a fan. I support it in your diet only if you go organic. If not, take it out. Not worth it and all its issues!:o)

Ashli! You are hilarious (and honest) about those “bad dates” with B&J. Precisely why cheat meals that “go there” ala dessert sometimes involve the non-dairy ice cream I mentioned, or–better yet–homemade! Feels like you earned it. LOL Way to pay attention to your bod, lady! :)

Michelle! Good for you (and your girls!) on the organic. You must feel it’s worth the extra $$ with so many little bods to feed. Moms like you inspire me. That’s awesome. And no need to completely break up with things in your diet. We’re ALL about variety at MP4. That’s cool about your parents. I was vegan for a very long time. Make sure you report back about the goat’s milk ice cream, girl!

LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE this post! I am head over heals in LOVE w/ drinking milk but it does very bad things to my stomach and to my skin. Not to mention the fact that everything they do to the cows and then to the milk scares the bajebus out of me.

So I have resigned myself to adding a smidge of milk to my coffee (too bad my work d/n have organic, I have panic attacks about that once/month) and for the occasional cheat meal. However, even now w/ my cheats I stay away from heavy dairy cheats b/c it is just not worth it.

And fundamentally I am of the school of thought that humans DO NOT need cow milk. We are the only species that drinks another species milk. There is something wrong w/ that, IMO.

Oh wait, then add on the rapid rate at which children are progressing hormonally……that couldn’t possibly be linked to all the hormones pumped into dairy and other foods????? (hear the sarcasm in my voice).

So anyhow, Heather, thank you for a fabulous post. It only hardened my non-dairy approach to eating. If only I could get it out of my coffee…….

  8. Heather says:

Kas! Your adorableness knows no bounds. I use unsweetened plain almond milk in coffee. It either tastes the same, or I’m just used to it by now. Might be worth a try, but that’s not much dairy. Maybe you can buy a small carton of organic milk for the office and put nasty notes all over it threatening a law suit if anyone drinks it. Love the hormone and species comments. Seriously, there could just be an entire blog series of great discussions on the origins of ALL of our food, ala “The Omnivore’s Dilemma” (great read, ladies). It so impacts our health, our athletic per4mance, our function, our aging and longevity, and our beauty.

Great post, Heather! I am a registered dietitian, and I have to say your post is right-on. Nice job, and I love the little tongue-in-cheek remarks. Keep up the great work!!!

  10. Jodi says:

Heather, don’t tell people to read that book!lol They’ll never eat again! I’m still in therapy.

Dina, thank you for dropping by! It’s great to see you here!=D

Kas, are you trying to say that ice cream never comes into play with your cheat meals? hahaha!:o)

  11. Amy says:

Um, no, I am not trying to say that….BUT I try to keep it out!!!!

  12. Michelle says:

Entertaining read as usual, Heather! Awesome job!

  13. I love So Delicious products! I haven’t had the ice cream…yet! But I do love their coconut milk and creamer. A lot.

  14. I’m like you Joanna – the whole act of drinking cow’s milk just seems *weird* to me. It’s not like dogs drink giraffe milk when they grow up, so why we continue to drink milk – especially that of a different species – past the age of infancy is nooot exactly clear to me.

And NO I’m not sayin’ we should bottle breast milk or make ice cream out of it! I’m just sayin… ;) There are obviously some good nutritional benefits we can get from milk, but I don’t think it’s 100% necessary.

  15. Heather says:

Jodi!-Omnivore’s Dilemma is awesome and you know it. LOL :)

Dina!-Thanks SO much for chiming in. And so glad you’re feelin’ me (us) on this issue.

    Joanna!- What?! So Delicious has a creamer? Good to know. {wink + thumbs up}

Michelle!-Thanks, lady. Especially for getting my humor. ;)

Erika!-First, how much am I loving the “Dr. TriRunner”? {intrigued} Thanks for the chuckle. The dog/giraffe milk comment got me. haha :D

All of you ladies are so great. Such thinkers! Clearly brawn and brains go together beautifully.
